A is for Acorn

Have you heard of the ABC Challenge for artists? Neither had I until my son mentioned it might be a great addition to my socials. The idea is to create a piece of artwork for every letter of the alphabet. I chose to work with nature-related words like acorn, basil, and cactus. I then took it a step further and wrote a poem for each design. My poetic style leans toward children’s verse, but I believe children’s poetry can be enjoyed by any age. When I compose a poem, I try to recapture the joys of my childhood and the peaceful feeling I get when I’m surrounded by nature.

I’m going to share my first challenge poem with you. It was inspired by the acorn season of 2020. We were still shuttered and shocked by COVID, and that fall the oaks rained down a massive storm of acorns. They made a racket, and we had to be careful not to get hit in the head when we went outside. Finding humor in dark situations, I wrote “A Is for Acorn.” It has a Willy Wonka vibe. I hope you enjoy it!

I can hear the acorns dropping.

With no sign that they are stopping.

They’re popping up atop the roof, then down the drain,

It sounds so strange.

I feel that I might be deranged.

I fear that I might be insane.

Perhaps one hit me on the head?

Perhaps these acorns want me dead!

Still more of them are plopping.

They’re skipping and they’re hopping.

With no sign that they are stopping.

I can hear the acorns dropping.
